If anyone is around Penrith why not pop into the gallery for a great show about holiday and memory. The images above where taken on a summer road trip on the Queensland Coast. Aaahh the memories.

‘This exhibition investigates the annual holiday experience of mid-twentieth century Australia. Dark nights, caravans, winding roads and oversized pineapples loom large upon the horizon, summoning memories of romantic sunsets and eerie shadows. Memories of fun in the sun, surf and bush retreats are accompanied by recollections of vinyl car seats, cries of 'are we there yet' dripping ice creams, flies and Aerogard; all typifying that beloved long, hot Australian summer. On show in the main Gallery are the works of twenty-nine visual artists, across various mediums including photography, painting, moving image and installation.  If you would like more information, then that is right here.

Gadens’ Brisbane reception has been transformed with a vibrant exhibition that explores Californian style.
The colourful installation has been curated in celebration of Gadens’ sponsorship of Queensland Art Gallery’s upcoming exhibition, California Design 1930–1965: Living in a Modern Way.
Until February 2014, visitors to Gadens’ reception area will be treated to a visual feast of California-inspired pieces and modernist Australian design objects, including a Harley Davidson motorcycle, a collection of original modernist chairs, and a 1965 Rickenbacker electric guitar and 1960 Fender Jazzmaster. Also included in the exhibition are several pieces by Australian artists, such as Anna Carey’s fictional reconstructions of distinctive houses and motels built in the fifties and sixties, characterised by their ice-cream colours and mid-century styling.
California Design 1930-1965: Living in a Modern Way, which starts from 2 November at Queensland Art Gallery, will introduce Australian audiences to a broad spectrum of industrial, architectural, commercial, fashion and craft design from California. Included in the broadly appealing exhibition are objects by acclaimed designers Charles and Ray Eames as well as household names, Levi Strauss and Mattel.

FIBRO COAST

 This image is a snow dome I created for the Graphic Identity for the exhibition 'Fibro Coast' which will be held at the Gold Coast City Art Gallery February 15 - March 23, 2014. 'The exhibition features works by artists who holidayed here from the 1920s such as Vida Lahey and Ethel Carrick Fox and then continues with new work by contemporary artists who including Anna Carey, Bruce Reynolds, Rebecca Ross and Elaine Campaner have been invited to respond to the continuing resonance of these structures within the rapidly changing beach front environment For more information click here.

HOW IT HAPPENED

I thought I would reveal how my photographs are created as people are very curious and often ask. First step is location, location, location. I needed a wide-open space, which would also capture the surrounding environment. My mind was so distracted with finding an appropriate space that I did not realise that the space I chose was not only successful practically but also conceptually. It wasn’t until I returned to the space to re shoot that it all came together. The spaces were demolition sites, which meant I was replacing the absent spaces with presence. Lying on my stomach with a 50mm lens, I select the model while the sky and landscape is out of focus. The photography was a race against time to capture the fading soft afternoon light, which illuminated the imaginative spaces. Being an abandoned demolition site the spaces were over grown with aggressive weeds, bindi’s, broken glass, bugs and insects. By the end of the day my elbows were red raw, I had been the bull ants afternoon tea and I was covered in bindi’s which I still find in my clothes to this day.

Magic

Look at the beautiful fragment I discovered after rummaging through some found lino. I think it shows Dylan Trigg’s argument in a weird but wonderful way. The ruins of space really do allow us to identify place. Pure MAGIC.

The Memory of Place

I am very excited to have ordered Dylan Trigg's new book The Memory of Place. 

Edward Casey gives an inspiring insight into the books content in his writing for the blurb. 

"From the frozen landscapes of the Antarctic to the haunted houses of childhood, the memory of places we experience is fundamental to a sense of self. The Memory of Place charts the memorial landscape that is written into the body and its experience of the world. Dylan Trigg’s The Memory of Place offers a lively and original intervention into contemporary debates within “place studies,” an interdisciplinary field at the intersection of philosophy, geography, architecture, urban design, and environmental studies. Through a series of provocative investigations, Trigg analyzes monuments in the representation of public memory; “transitional” contexts, such as airports and highway rest stops; and the “ruins” of both memory and place in sites such as Auschwitz. While developing these original analyses, The Memory of Place argues that the eerie disquiet of the uncanny is at the core of the remembering body, and thus of ourselves. The result is a compelling and novel rethinking of memory and place that should spark new conversations across the field of place studies".
